West Virginia Governor Steps in to Keep National Parks Open During Federal Shutdown
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Virginia’s national parks will remain open to visitors despite the ongoing federal government shutdown, thanks to a funding agreement signed by Governor Patrick Morrisey. The move ensures continued access to popular destinations like New River Gorge and Harpers Ferry, vital contributors to the state’s booming tourism industry.
The federal shutdown forced the closure of visitor centers and suspension of public transportation within the parks, potentially disrupting peak fall visitation. Governor Morrisey has authorized state resources to restore these essential services, guaranteeing a continued welcome for both residents and out-of-state travelers.
“Our national parks are some of West Virginia’s greatest treasures, and I’m proud to ensure they remain open during this time,” Governor Morrisey stated. “I invite folks from near and far to take advantage of West Virginia’s natural beauty and plan a trip to visit one of our national parks or nearby state parks.”
The timing of the shutdown is notably impactful, as October is a crucial month for tourism driven by vibrant fall foliage. In 2024, New River gorge National Park & Preserve welcomed a remarkable 1,811,937 visitors, while Harpers Ferry National Historical Park saw approximately 488,000.
These parks aren’t just scenic attractions; they are economic engines. West Virginia recently surpassed $9.1 billion in annual tourism economic impact, fueled by over 77.2 million visitors who collectively spend more than $18 million daily within the state.
“Tourism is essential to West Virginia’s economy, and we want to ensure that our national parks can continue welcoming folks to the Mountain State,” emphasized Chelsea ruby,Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Tourism. “Thanks to Governor Morrisey for allowing us to use state funds, travelers can still visit our parks for stunning fall foliage.”
