the Basilicata Region of Italy is reinforcing its surveillance and prevention programs related to West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV), emphasizing proactive measures to safeguard public health. The Human Healthcare, Veterinary and food Safety Office of the General Health Directorate and the policies of the Basilicata Region are actively promoting preventative strategies as the primary defense against these viruses.

Currently, National monitoring is underway to track the circulation of WNV and USUV. Local healthcare companies within Basilicata are committed to strengthening surveillance and prevention activities, aligning with guidelines from the Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Officials stress that while ther is no current health emergency, responsible behavior is crucial.

Residents are urged to adopt several key practices to minimize risk.These include the correct and diligent use of topical repellents, strictly adhering to manufacturer instructions. Protective clothing, such as long trousers and long-sleeved, light-colored shirts, is recommended, particularly during evening and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Physical barriers, like mosquito nets on windows and doors, are also advised, alongside utilizing environmental controls such as air conditioning and fans to create less hospitable conditions for mosquitoes. Eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds is paramount, both in private and public spaces.

This includes removing standing water from containers like jars, flower pots, children’s toys, and ornamental features. Residents should also prevent water stagnation in fountains, gutters, tanks, and irrigation systems, or treat and cover rainwater collection systems.

The regional office is also calling on all municipalities in Basilicata to intensify environmental disinfestation campaigns, working in collaboration with local healthcare companies and following scientifically validated protocols. Local health authorities (ASL) are available to provide technical support and guidance to ensure effective and coordinated interventions.
