West Nile Virus Reaches Rome’s Doorstep: Lazio Reports Seven New Cases
The West Nile virus has made its presence felt in the province of Rome, wiht two new cases confirmed in the Anzio and Nettuno coastal areas. Across the Lazio region, a total of seven new infections have been recorded, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 28, according to the Spallanzani Institute. Of thes new cases, two individuals have developed neurological syndrome, while five are experiencing fever.
The majority of infections, 26 in total, are concentrated in the province of Latina, including a woman who tragically passed away last week at the Fondi hospital. Currently, eleven patients are hospitalized in general wards, with two more in intensive care due to the severity of their condition.
In response to the growing concern, the Lazio Region has implemented precautionary measures, extending virus testing to all blood donors. A control room meeting held by the Regional Health Directorate has also expanded containment requirements to the ASL Roma 6, encompassing the Castelli Romani area and a section of the southern coast.
Despite the rising numbers, Lazio President Francesco Rocca has urged the public to remain calm, stating, “We must not create alarmism. with the virus, we must now learn to live with it. It is not Covid. So let’s also try to bring back to the right track.” He emphasized that the contagion occurs through “normal mosquitoes” and stressed the importance of recognizing symptoms and taking preventative measures.
Meanwhile, other regions are also on high alert. In Avellino, the ASL has activated a series of prevention measures, even though no cases have been reported in the province to date. Integrated veterinary surveillance and clinical monitoring have been strengthened to ensure the timely identification of any suspicious symptoms.
Health authorities are reiterating that the West Nile virus is not transmitted from person to person. They strongly recommend the use of effective insect repellents, wearing appropriate protective clothing, installing mosquito nets, and eliminating potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes, such as stagnant water in saucers, containers, and untreated fountains.
In Pozzuoli, an unusual disinfestation plan has been initiated by the municipality to mitigate any potential risks associated with the West Nile mosquito, although no health emergencies have been reported at this time. Similarly, Alessandria is implementing a protective barrier around its urban perimeter to combat mosquitoes, a measure taken independently of any West Nile virus concerns.
