To combat these hurdles, researchers designed and evaluated the first randomized trial assessing an interactive mobile application built on the DICE Approach.
Co-invented by Helen Kales, chair of the UC Davis Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Laura N. Gitlin, dean emerita of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University, the application structures a step-by-step problem-solving pathway. Caregivers systematically describe a specific behavior, investigate potential underlying triggers, create tailored non-drug intervention strategies, and evaluate the efficacy of those approaches over time.
During the controlled trial, researchers tracked primary family caregivers interviewed at baseline, one month, and three months. By the three-month mark, immediate users of the app demonstrated statistically significant reductions in caregiver distress. Furthermore, secondary outcomes revealed that immediate users observed fewer behavioral symptoms in their care recipients alongside notable improvements in overall caregiver well-being.
Epidemiological Impact and Technological Support
According to statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 7 million people in the United States live with Alzheimer’s disease, a figure projected to approach 13 million by the year 2050.
Gitlin noted that participants interacted with the platform roughly once a month while heavily utilizing daily supportive text messages containing supportive tips and curated educational modules. “Caregivers in this sample were managing, on average per month, about six challenging behavioral symptoms such as agitation, restlessness and wandering,” Gitlin stated. “Using the app reduced caregiver distress with these behaviors even though they still occurred.” Both Kales and Gitlin served on the Lancet Commission for Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care, reinforcing the clinical rigor behind the platform’s design.

While the measured effects in the trial ranged from small to moderate, investigators emphasized that the findings establish an essential proof of concept. Technology can successfully impart actionable behavioral strategies to domestic caregivers, preserving their health while enhancing the quality of life for patients.
