Waterford Balcony Fall: Children Hospitalised After Incident at Mount Suir Manor

March 20, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A three-year-old boy remains hospitalized with head injuries after falling from a second-story balcony at Mount Suir Manor in Waterford City this morning, although his seven-year-old sister was discharged from University Hospital Waterford following the incident. The children fell after a glass pane from the balcony railing gave way at approximately 10:40 am, according to reports.

Gardaí responded to what they described as a “medical emergency” at the apartment complex in Gracedieu shortly before 11:00 am. “Shortly before 11am this morning, Friday 20th March 2026, gardaí in Waterford assisted other agencies in responding to a medical emergency at a residential property at Mount Suir, Waterford,” a Garda spokesperson stated. “An Garda Síochána has no additional information regarding the incident.”

The children’s fall, approximately 20 feet, occurred at Block C of Mount Suir Manor, a complex that has been under the remit of Waterford City and County Council since 2019. The fallen glass panel left an indentation in the ground, with a corner remaining upright, and the boy landed just inches away from it, according to eyewitness accounts.

Waterford City and County Council has launched a “formal investigation” into the incident and held an emergency meeting this afternoon. In a statement, a council spokesperson said, “Waterford City and County Council was notified of a serious incident at the Mount Suir Apartment complex in Waterford City on Friday, 20 March. The council has reached out to the family to offer support and a formal investigation into the incident has commenced.”

The incident has renewed scrutiny of living conditions at Mount Suir Manor, where residents have reportedly raised concerns about the state of balconies and properties for several years. The complex has been the subject of numerous complaints, and in January 2025, a call was made to establish a task force to address ongoing issues with damp, mould, water leaks, and anti-social behaviour, as reported by the Waterford Independent.

Workmen were observed at the apartment complex this afternoon replacing the damaged glass panels with wooden sheets. Clúid Housing, which operates the complex alongside the council, was aware of damp issues in some homes, according to the same Waterford Independent report.

The council’s emergency meeting, chaired by Waterford Council Director of Services for Housing Seamus De Faoite, concluded without a public statement beyond the initial notification of the investigation. The condition of the three-year-old boy remains unknown, and the council has not indicated a timeline for the completion of its investigation.
