Cinema Counters Streaming with Premium Experience, Nostalgia

BERLIN – Despite the rise‍ of streaming services, the cinema isn’t fading away-it’s evolving. Industry experts suggest theaters⁤ are leaning into what streaming can’t ⁣replicate: a⁢ high-quality, shared experience complete with ⁢superior visuals, sound, and even the aroma of popcorn.

Wolfram Weber argues that no home setup can match the cinematic⁢ experience. “No living room can ⁣offer the picture and sound quality⁤ with wich we show a film – and⁢ above all, it doesn’t smell that good of⁢ popcorn,” he stated. This sentiment is echoed by streaming ‌services ⁢themselves, many of which now strategically‌ release‌ major productions in theaters first to build anticipation and prestige.

The future ⁢of⁢ cinema appears to be focused on luxury, diverse offerings, and immersive experiences. While cinema ‍visits may become less⁢ frequent for some, the core appeal of‍ the big screen and communal⁣ viewing remains strong. The industry is transforming into a premium entertainment option, complementing‍ the convenience of streaming⁢ for everyday film viewing.

Film critic Anna-Rebekka Helmy recommends the ‍sci-fi comedy “Bugonia” starring Emma Stone and ⁢the German comedy “No Hit Wonder” featuring‍ florian david Fitz and Nora‌ Tschirner. (ZDFheute, October 29, ⁢2025)
