Washington Post Ditches Creator Project, Signaling Media Shift

Newsrooms embrace Creator Economy to Boost Reach and Relevance

News organizations are increasingly adopting strategies to integrate the “creator economy” into their operations, aiming to expand their audience and enhance their connection with younger demographics. This shift involves formalizing creator programs, aligning brand aesthetics with creator voices, and building in-house creator teams.

According to insights from Kellett, a three-step approach is recommended for newsrooms looking to successfully adopt creator strategies:

  • Formalize a creator program: News organizations should identify and cultivate internal talent that is agreeable and skilled in operating within the creator space.
  • Align on aesthetics: It’s crucial that a creator’s authentic voice resonates with the brand’s identity without being entirely subsumed by it, ensuring a natural fit.
  • Build an in-house creator team: By leveraging creator-led storytelling, newsrooms can effectively broaden their brand’s reach and increase their relevance among target audiences.

Journalist and creator Sophia Smith Galer highlights the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships between newsrooms and freelance creators. She suggests that news organizations can offer significant value by providing legal and industrial backing, fair compensation, and attractive, non-restrictive collaboration terms. Though, Smith Galer notes that such ideal scenarios are frequently enough not realized in practice.

“Newsrooms frequently enough don’t have the budgets, frankly, for news creators,” Smith Galer states. “They expect creators to work with them and be paid unfairly for it. There’s no incentive to partner with a newsroom that offers very little and hasn’t prioritized social media,so it can’t even help you increase engagement as its own engagement is low.”

Despite these challenges, various collaborations between journalists and creators are emerging. An example of such a partnership is the social media collaboration between journalist-creator Enrique Anarte and MediaWise, a media literacy initiative by the poynter Institute.
