Detailler explained that even though the rind is not consumed, watermelons grow close to the ground and are exposed to dirt, contaminated water, animal waste, and improperly processed fertilizers. During harvesting, transportation, and sale, watermelons can come into contact with numerous individuals, some of whom may not practise proper hand hygiene.

Cutting an unwashed watermelon can transfer harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella and E.coli, from the rind to the edible flesh, potentially leading to food poisoning. As watermelon is typically eaten raw, washing it under running water and scrubbing with a clean brush is a crucial step to mitigate these risks.
