Measles Confirmed in Wasatch County, Linked to High School Students

Heber City, Utah – Wasatch‌ county health officials have confirmed five cases of measles among students at Wasatch High School, marking‍ the first reported instances of the disease in the⁢ county.

Health officials report that the students may have been infectious while attending school or school activities on november ⁣14, 17, and 18, as ⁣well as during a school play held on November ⁤15. Two additional potential cases are currently under evaluation.

“We did have ‌a wastewater test ⁣indicate the presence of measles in the community on November 6, and with cases existing in other⁣ parts of the state, we weren’t surprised to see⁤ cases ⁢here,” ⁢said Wasatch County Health Department Director ‌Jonelle Fitzgerald. “The cases we have confirmed⁢ at the high school are not‌ connected to each other, and as of that, we suspect that other ‍cases may start to pop up in the community.”

Measles is‍ a highly contagious viral infection that can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or‌ sneezes.‍ Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that spreads over the body. The Centers for Disease⁤ Control ‍and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people receive the⁢ measles, mumps, and⁢ rubella (MMR) vaccine for protection.
