War on Iran: Civilian Impact, Historical Context & Regional Response (March 2026)

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The UAE’s air defense systems are responding to incoming missile and drone threats from Iran, the country’s Ministry of Defence stated Saturday, March 22, 2026, according to reports emerging from the ongoing conflict. The statement confirmed that sounds heard across the country were due to interceptions by air defense systems.

The escalation follows weeks of direct military confrontation between Israel and Iran, initiated by strikes from both nations on February 28, 2026, which resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was subsequently appointed as his successor by the Assembly of Experts. Iran has retaliated with attacks targeting U.S. Military facilities and energy infrastructure in Gulf states, while Israel has intensified airstrikes in Lebanon in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah.

According to a MERIP Roundtable discussion held March 18, 2026, the immense damage being done to Iran is less prominent in Western media discourse than the strategic calculations of the United States and Israel. Iranian sources report over 1,400 civilian casualties, 18,000 injuries and 61,000 civilian structures damaged. The United Nations estimates approximately 3.2 million people have been displaced.

The conflict has also seen direct U.S. Involvement, with a strike on Iran’s Natanz nuclear site on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Tehran responded with two ballistic missiles aimed towards a U.S.-UK base in the Indian Ocean, though neither hit their targets. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has warned against any ground invasion of Iran, stating that “surprises will be waiting” for him if such an action were to occur.

Experts note diverging goals between the United States and Israel in the conflict. While coordination remains close, the U.S. Views Iran through a broader strategic lens, while Israel maintains a more regional focus, according to a recent analysis by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. This divergence has led to reluctance from U.S. Allies in Europe to intervene, isolating the United States and Israel.

Air raid sirens sounded in Jordan’s Aqaba on Saturday as an Iranian missile passed over the city, reportedly heading toward Israel’s Negev region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released a video showcasing its air defense missile warehouses. An Iranian military spokesman reportedly told Donald Trump, “You are fired.”

The United States and Israel have targeted Iranian military assets, leadership, and energy infrastructure, including the Sharan Oil depot in Tehran. More than 1,800 people have been killed, including eight U.S. Service members and at least 175 students reportedly killed in a U.S. Strike on an Iranian elementary school.
