Wanderlei Silva: The Axe Murderer Myth Debunked | Martial Arts

February 11, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Wanderlei Silva, the Brazilian mixed martial artist known as “The Axe Murderer,” was announced as the next inductee into the “pioneer wing” of the UFC Hall of Fame in February 2024. The announcement recognizes Silva’s significant contributions to the sport, particularly his dominance in Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships.

Silva, born July 3, 1976, in Curitiba, Brazil, amassed a professional MMA record of 35 wins, 14 losses, and one draw, with one no contest, according to Tapology. He holds the record for the most wins, knockouts, title defenses, and the longest winning streak in PRIDE history. He previously competed for Bellator MMA in the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions.

Throughout his career, Silva fought out of several prominent teams, including Chute Boxe Academy (1996–2007), Wand Fight Team (2007–present), Kings MMA (2011–2018), and Evolução Thai Brasil (2018–present). His trainers included Rudimar Fedrigo, Cristiano Marcello, and André Amado.

Silva’s aggressive fighting style earned him the moniker “The Axe Murderer.” He is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a black prajiad in Muay Thai. His last recorded fight was on September 27, 2025, according to Tapology. He has career disclosed earnings of $1,670,000 USD.

The induction into the UFC Hall of Fame acknowledges Silva’s impact on the evolution of MMA, particularly during the period when PRIDE Fighting Championships served as a major global competitor to the UFC. The decline of PRIDE, as noted by Sherdog, was evident in its final events in Las Vegas in 2007, which, while entertaining, failed to sustain the organization.
