Wakefield Landslip: Rail Disruption – LNER & Northern Services Affected

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Major disruption to rail services is affecting travellers across northern England and the East Midlands today, Sunday, February 15, 2026, following a landslip in the Wakefield area.

National Rail has warned that significant delays are expected for the remainder of the day, impacting LNER services between Peterborough and Leeds, Bradford Forster Square, and Harrogate. Northern services operating between Sheffield/Doncaster and Leeds are also affected.

The disruption is compounded by pre-planned engineering works between Peterborough and London King’s Cross, meaning no direct trains are currently running to the capital. The main line between Leeds and York via Garforth is closed for engineering work, resulting in bus replacements or diversions for services on that route.

Passengers are advised that bus replacements are operating on some routes that usually pass through Wakefield Westgate station, while others are being diverted. Some services are running between Leeds and Doncaster, utilising routes via York and Castleford.

National Rail is offering ticket flexibility, allowing passengers to travel on alternative train operators at no extra cost. This includes TransPennine Express services between Manchester, Leeds and York/Newcastle, Northern trains between Carlisle and Newcastle, and CrossCountry services between Sheffield/Doncaster, York and Newcastle/Edinburgh.

Tickets are also valid on LNER services up to two hours before or after the originally scheduled departure time, or on either of the two LNER services before or after the cancelled train, whichever best suits the passenger’s journey. Customers who choose to defer their travel can use their tickets without additional charges on Monday, February 16, 2026.

Wakefield Westgate station offers step-free access to all platforms, with lifts available. Staff assistance is available between 05:00 and 23:59 on Mondays to Saturdays, and from 08:30 to 23:59 on Sundays, according to National Rail. The station also provides CCTV, customer information screens, and support points, although public Wi-Fi is currently unavailable.

The Trainline reports that Wakefield Westgate serves the area with regular trains on the Leeds branch of the East Coast Main Line, the Huddersfield Line, and the Wakefield Line. Trains typically run between Wakefield Westgate and London Kings Cross every half-hour, with a journey time of approximately two hours. Services also connect to Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, as well as to Leeds, Doncaster, Sheffield, and Huddersfield via Northern trains.
