Wagner Injury Update: Weltman Announces Rehabilitation Timeline

Orlando Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced Monday that center Moe Wagner’s recovery from a torn ACL will require a longer rehabilitation period than initially anticipated, delaying his return to the court.

Weltman disclosed the updated timeline during the team’s Media Day, adding that guard Jalen Suggs is expected to return from his own injury earlier in the season. No specific dates were given for either player’s return, but Weltman indicated Wagner’s recovery will be more protracted.

Wagner sustained the ACL injury in a December 21st game against the Miami Heat. Prior to the injury, Wagner was experiencing a career year offensively, averaging 12.9 points per game while shooting 36 percent from three-point range. His absence, compounded by an oblique injury to star forward Paolo Banchero, placed increased demands on other players.

Despite the setback, Wagner rejoined the Magic on a one-year, $5 million contract in July, choosing to remain with the team despite potentially more lucrative offers elsewhere. Weltman expressed gratitude for Wagner’s decision, stating, “I’m just thankful that Moe chose us. You know, Moe has a lot of options. He’s an important part of our team, and the fact that he, you know, reinvested in us, is really gratifying to us.”

Wagner’s new contract includes a no-trade clause, signaling the Magic’s commitment to his continued role with the team. He is entering his fifth season in Orlando, having been acquired by the team after being waived by the Boston Celtics in 2020-21. He will also continue to play alongside his brother, Franz Wagner.

Weltman’s comments came during a Media Day where he and coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized the team’s readiness to meet heightened expectations for the upcoming season. The Magic recently signed Paolo Banchero to a five-year contract extension and acquired guard Desmond Bane via trade, adding to a roster aiming for contention in the Eastern Conference.

The Magic start their preseason schedule on October 4th against the Miami Heat, followed by their regular season opener against the same opponent on October 22nd.
