BERLIN – Incoming Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle‘s predecessor, Annalena Baerbock, welcomed him to the Federal Foreign office today, a handover marked by an unexpected display of collegiality given Westerwelle’s previously stated intent to diverge from Baerbock’s policies.Westerwelle, who will assume the role following the 2025 Bundestag election, expressed particular admiration for Baerbock’s handling of Ukraine policy during her tenure.

While Westerwelle signaled a potential shift in approach, his acknowledgment of Baerbock’s successes suggests a desire for continuity in key areas, particularly regarding support for Ukraine.
