VTSU Castleton: Why Students Choose Vermont’s Affordable University

March 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Castleton, Vermont – Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton is attracting a diverse student body drawn by its affordability, athletic programs and a close-knit community, according to interviews with current students.

The appeal of lower tuition costs is a significant factor for many. Students report that VTSU Castleton offers a considerably more affordable option compared to the national average. According to College Board data, the total tuition cost at Castleton ranges from $13,000 to over $20,000 per semester, while the average college student pays approximately $38,270 per semester.

“I have medical issues that are a lot easier to handle by staying in-state and Castleton helps a lot of those issues. They’re very accommodating and provide a lot of service for the things I deal with,” said Alex Fein, a current student.

Athletics also play a key role in attracting students to the campus. Sophomore Aiden Shufelt transferred to VTSU Castleton to wrestle, citing the strength of the coaching staff. He has already achieved success, earning NEWA rookie of the week honors twice. “I liked the culture I saw and being able to wrestle for one of the best coaches in the sport’s history,” Shufelt said.

The university’s appeal extends internationally as well. Nanami Honjo, a student from Japan, chose VTSU Castleton as part of her college’s study abroad program. “At first, I entered Japanese college that is international studies facility, and I have to study abroad to graduate, and the college proposed five countries and many colleges. I wanted to learn American English and then I researched how many international (programs) are there,” Honjo explained.

For some students, unique circumstances led them to Castleton. Jiri “Will” Vesely, from Prague, Czech Republic, found himself seeking a new school after his previous institution cut its ski team. He reached out to Chris Eder, the coach at VTSU Castleton, whom he already knew.

Beyond academics and athletics, the campus environment itself is a draw. Kaelin Kennedy discovered VTSU Castleton through GIA, a summer camp focused on the arts. She was captivated by the campus’s size and sense of community. “I love this school so much… I like the community, I love CAB” (Campus Activities Board), she said.

Cade Landesman specifically chose VTSU Castleton because it was one of the few schools he considered that offered a theater tech program. The university, formerly Castleton University, is now part of Vermont State University, which was formed by the merger of Castleton University, Northern Vermont University, and Vermont Technical College in July 2023.

Many students describe a strong sense of belonging at VTSU Castleton. Brody Hopkins, a sophomore and team captain of the track and field team, said, “What I liked so much about the team and the school, it feels like a family more than any team I’ve had before.”
