Volvo Cars Get Major UX Update for 2020+ Models

February 18, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Volvo car owners will soon receive a major software update, version 5.05, bringing a redesigned user interface to vehicles built after 2020, the automaker confirmed in a press release this week. The rollout, delayed from its original schedule, begins immediately and will reach 2.5 million vehicles globally over the next three weeks.

The update introduces “Volvo Car UX,” a completely revamped interface featuring a new home screen and a persistent, bottom-aligned application bar for quick access to frequently used functions. This marks a significant shift from the initial interface design implemented when Google began integrating its automotive operating system in 2020.

Google first introduced its Google-based operating system for in-car employ in 2020, initially deploying it across several vehicle models. However, the company subsequently transitioned to a new interface design that wasn’t universally available across its entire range. The current update resolves this inconsistency, extending the updated experience to all compatible vehicles.

ChromeOS, the operating system underpinning the in-car experience, is a proprietary system developed by Google, derived from the open-source ChromiumOS project, which itself builds upon Gentoo Linux. As of February 10, 2026, the latest release of ChromeOS is version 144.0.7559.172, with beta and developer versions also available, according to Google’s official documentation.

The update to version 5.05 is being delivered over-the-air and Volvo has not specified a cutoff date for vehicles eligible to receive the new interface. The company has not yet commented on plans to extend the update to older models.
