Volkswagen ⁢T-Roc 1.5 eTSI R-Line Review: Mild Hybrid sportiness ⁣Comes at ⁣a Premium

Milan, Italy – Volkswagen’s T-Roc, a popular subcompact SUV, receives a ⁢boost with the introduction ‌of a 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid powertrain in the⁣ sporty R-Line trim. Tested recently, the 150 HP version blends performance with fuel efficiency, though its price point positions it ⁣firmly in the premium segment.

Powertrain & Performance: The ⁤T-Roc ⁢1.5 eTSI utilizes a 48-volt mild hybrid system, adding 20 CV to⁤ the four-cylinder engine. ⁤This system‌ “helps” during acceleration and reduces emissions and consumption. The engine is⁢ paired with a seven-speed ⁣dual-clutch DSG gearbox, described‍ as ”rapid and fluid,” ⁤responding promptly even with paddle shifters. Volkswagen claims a 0-100 km/h time of‍ 8.9 ‌seconds. Active Cylinder Management ⁢(ACT) further enhances ⁤efficiency by deactivating cylinders during calm driving.

Handling & Ride: the R-Line trim includes a “progressive” variable ratio⁤ steering system.‌ This setup offers‍ a⁣ “soft” response for high-speed driving, becoming quicker and more⁤ decisive with increased steering wheel⁤ rotation – requiring onyl ⁢two turns lock-to-lock. Adaptive electronic shock⁢ absorbers, coupled with a refined multilink rear suspension, minimize body roll without‌ sacrificing comfort. ⁢A noted drawback is “annoying⁣ rustling noises” generated by the large side mirrors at ‌highway speeds.

Fuel Economy: During testing, the‌ on-board computer registered 15.4 ‌km/l (approximately 36.3 mpg) in combined city ⁤and highway driving.

Equipment ‍& Pricing (as of ⁤test‍ date): Currently, the⁤ T-Roc is‌ available with the 1.5 mild hybrid in 116 HP or 150 HP configurations. The base Life trim (116 HP) starts at⁣ €33,900 and includes front and rear parking sensors,a rear-view camera,single-zone automatic climate‌ control, and full LED headlights. The tested 150 HP R-Line carries ‍a price tag of €41,350.⁣ Additional R-Line features include a ⁤semi-autonomous driving and parking system, a leather steering wheel with DSG paddles, and specific bumpers ‌with glossy ⁣black inserts.
