Historic Walls Preserved in Urban Renovation: A Minimalist Approach to Revitalizing a Neglected Property
In a striking example of adaptive reuse, architects have successfully transformed a derelict urban property into a functional and aesthetically pleasing home. The project, situated on a challenging 5 by 31-meter lot, focused on preserving the integrity of the original structure while introducing modern elements for light and ventilation. The strategy involved retaining the historic masonry walls, a testament to the building’s past, and integrating a series of open and covered volumes to create a dynamic living space.
The original house suffered from significant structural damage, including collapsed roofs and extensive overgrowth, indicating a prolonged period of neglect. Instead of opting for complete demolition, the design team implemented a sensitive renovation plan. This approach prioritized the conservation of the existing masonry walls, recognizing their historical and architectural value. To enhance the interior environment, the design incorporates strategically placed patios and skylights, flooding the space with natural light and improving air circulation.
The home is organized into six distinct volumes, a purposeful arrangement that fosters visual clarity and cross-ventilation. This configuration allows for a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless living experience. The interplay of these volumes not only addresses the functional needs of the inhabitants but also contributes to the unique character of the residence, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and context-sensitive design principles.
