Virtual Reality offers Comfort and Connection to Young Cancer Patients in Belgium

BRASSCHAAT, Belgium – A groundbreaking virtual reality submission, “The World of Aya,” is offering a new lifeline to young adults battling cancer in Belgium. Developed ⁢by Venar and presented Tuesday at Casa‍ Callenta,a cancer support center ⁢in Brasschaat, the ⁣program allows patients to escape‌ the challenges of their treatment, find relaxation, and connect with‍ others facing‌ similar struggles.

“our virtual world offers young cancer patients the chance ⁢to put their ⁣worries aside,” explained Robert ‍Scheltjens, chairman of VZW Supernils, the institution behind the project. “They can also meet people there – friends, family, or fellow sufferers who understand what⁤ they are going⁤ through. That connectedness is essential.”

The⁢ initiative is deeply rooted in personal‌ tragedy and a powerful desire to help others. VZW Supernils was founded by Robert and his family following the 2016 death of their son, ‍Nils Scheltjens, to leukemia at the age of 24. During his treatment, Nils expressed a ⁤wish to support others navigating the same tough path.

“To make our son’s dream come true, we ‌founded VZW Supernils,” Scheltjens shared. through ⁤generous support from organizations like ⁢De Warmste Week and the Foundation Against Cancer, alongside numerous corporate⁤ and community ‍partners, the vision of “Supernils, Super fresh” has become a reality.

A Digital Sanctuary: The World of Aya

“The World of Aya,” created by Youssef Chatar of⁢ Venar, transports users to a serene digital forest. At its center stands the “Tower of Wisdom,” a hub providing vital data on topics crucial to ⁣young cancer patients – from⁤ nutrition and sexuality to coping⁤ with grief, loss, and physical side⁣ effects.

But the application goes beyond information. Using VR headsets,⁣ patients⁢ can connect with one another in real-time, fostering a‌ sense of community and shared⁢ experience. “It’s about recognition, support, but also just a light conversation,” Scheltjens emphasized. “We want to offer a place where it doesn’t just have to be⁤ about illness.”

The⁢ potential⁢ of this technology was instantly recognized by those who tested it. Koen⁣ van ‌Impe, CEO of the Foundation Against Cancer, described the experience as ⁤”really extraordinary,” highlighting the power of⁣ a safe, virtual environment for sharing experiences.

VZW Supernils is making “The World of⁤ Aya” freely available to Casa Callenta in Brasschaat and 14 hospitals across Belgium.‌ The project is still ⁣in its early stages, with ⁤ongoing growth planned to ‌expand its features and reach.
