Vinícius Júnior Racism Allegation: Champions League Match Halted
A Champions League knockout playoff match between Benfica and Real Madrid was delayed for 11 minutes Tuesday after Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior reported alleged racist abuse from Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, sparking outrage and a debate over player conduct and responsibility.
The incident occurred shortly after Vinícius scored the only goal of the first leg at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. He celebrated by running towards the Benfica supporters, cupping his ear to the crowd, and dancing at the corner flag. Some Benfica fans responded by throwing objects at the Real Madrid players.
Prestianni then confronted Vinícius, appearing to say something while covering his mouth with his jersey. Vinícius immediately pointed to Prestianni and alerted the referee, François Letexier, claiming he had been racially insulted, specifically alleging Prestianni called him “monkey.”
Referee Letexier immediately activated UEFA’s three-step anti-racism protocol, pausing the match while stadium officials announced a warning to the crowd. Vinícius sat in the dugout during the delay, while some of his teammates moved towards the sideline.
Following the resumption of play, Vinícius posted on Instagram: “Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to cover their mouths with their shirts to demonstrate how weak they are… Nothing that happened today is new to me in my life and in my family’s life. I was shown a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t know why.”
Prestianni responded on his own Instagram account, stating, “I wish to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vini Jr, who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard. I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.”
The incident drew swift condemnation from across the football world. Trent Alexander-Arnold, a Real Madrid player, called the incident “a disgrace to football” and said it had “overshadowed the performance.” Kylian Mbappé, who was on the field and witnessed the confrontation, reportedly told Prestianni that he was a racist, according to multiple reports.
Benfica manager José Mourinho, however, appeared to criticize Vinícius’s celebration, suggesting it provoked the reaction from the home fans. “Unfortunately he was not just happy to score that astonishing goal,” Mourinho told Amazon Prime. “When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way.” Mourinho similarly noted that Vinícius frequently experiences racist abuse, questioning why this continues to happen.
Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde supported Vinícius, stating, “The players who were near said that (Prestianni) said something ugly, that shouldn’t be said. If you cover your mouth to say something it’s because you are saying something that is not nice. I’m proud of my teammates who defended Vini and of Vini.”
Benfica players claimed Prestianni told them he had engaged in a normal provocation with Vinícius, denying any racist intent. Midfielder Leandro Barreiro said, “I asked him and he said it was a normal provocation between players during a match. He said it was nothing racist.”
The Brazilian soccer confederation released a statement on X, formerly Twitter, expressing solidarity with Vinícius, calling racism a crime with “no place in soccer anywhere” and praising his courage in reporting the incident.
Mourinho was shown a red card late in the match for complaining about the referee’s decisions regarding yellow cards, suggesting the referee was avoiding issuing cards that would lead to player suspensions in subsequent games.
The match resumed and Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory. Vinícius was jeered throughout the remainder of the game and struck by a bottle while near the sidelines in the closing minutes, prompting another announcement over the stadium’s public address system warning fans against throwing objects.
