Vilnius Puppet Theatre Enhances Safety with Uninterruptible Power

Historic Venue Upgrades Ensure Spectator Security and Operational Continuity

The Vilnius Puppet Theatre “Lėlė,” established in 1958, has completed significant renovations to improve visitor comfort and operational resilience. A key upgrade includes the installation of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, ensuring electricity for at least an hour during outages.

Prioritizing Audience and Artistic Safety

The theatre’s management focused on both professional stage equipment and spectator security during the reconstruction. “We prioritized not only professional theater equipment to ensure even better performance quality for theatergoers, but also their safety,” explained Arūnas Tarasauskas, head of the General Affairs and Economy Department.

Mr. Tarasauskas elaborated on the benefits: “This means that even if the electricity goes out, engineering systems, automatic window opening, and emergency exit lighting will remain operational. Ensuring the safety of spectators, staff, the theatre, and its props is one of our most important priorities.”

Integrating Technology into a Historic Gem

Implementing these upgrades within the historic Oginskių Palace complex in Vilnius’s Old Town presented unique challenges. While the UPS system was relatively straightforward to integrate, other technological updates required minimal intervention due to the protected status of the building’s walls. For instance, sound technology installations needed to be done with utmost care to preserve the integrity of the historical structure.

Expert Endorsement for Proactive Safety Measures

Edmundas Daukšas, a Lithuanian expert from energy management company Eaton, praised the theatre’s foresight. It is commendable that the theatre decided to focus on the quality of electricity supply and visitor safety in advance, rather than waiting for problems and their consequences to arise. he stated.

“Companies and organizations already know well the challenges they can face, so when implementing construction or reconstruction projects, they increasingly anticipate solutions that ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in advance. One such solution is to install an uninterruptible power supply, which not only ensures the quality of the supplied electricity: it protects the consumer from network disruptions, voltage fluctuations, and harmonics, but also provides electricity supply when the main power is lost.”

The move aligns with a growing trend among institutions to proactively secure power, a move that also boosts energy efficiency. UPS systems can operate at up to 99 percent efficiency, reducing energy loss and contributing to environmental conservation. In fact, a recent report indicated that UPS systems can reduce energy waste in commercial buildings by up to 30% annually (Eaton Energy Efficiency Report 2023).

A Legacy of Puppetry

The “Lėlė” Theatre is situated in the former Small City Hall, within the restored Oginskių Palace. Founded in 1958 by the initiative of Balys Lukošius, the Vilnius Puppet Theatre adopted its current name, Vilnius Theatre “Lėlė,” in 1971.
