Vietnam launches national sports movement to encourage healthy living
“When the people are strong, the nation is prosperous. A strong nation needs a healthy people. A developing country must start from a healthy community.”
Those words from President Ho Chi Minh anchored a national sports movement launched across Vietnam,prensa-latina.cu reported. The initiative coincided with the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of Hanoi from French colonial rule on October 10, 1954.
In the capital, approximately 12 mil people gathered around Hoan Kiem Lake and at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square under the slogan A nation in movement: for a healthy and strong Vietnam.
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra led a run around Hoan Kiem Lake to kick off the events.
Participation Across Provinces and Featured Disciplines
Across 33 other provinces and cities, roughly 100 mil additional participants joined the movement in a country of just over 105 million residents,prensa-latina.cu reported. Citizens took part by jogging, walking, or playing popular sports.
During her pre-celebration speech, Thanh Tra urged every citizen to choose at least one sport suited to their age, health, and personal conditions. She emphasized that the ruling party and state consistently place the people and public health at the center of national development.
Participants and visitors engaged in a wide variety of activities throughout Saturday and Sunday around the city’s lakes. The sports lineup included pickleball, bádminton, table tennis, sepak takraw, 3×3 basketball, and race walking.
Athletic Exhibitions and Medical Consultations
The program featured martial arts exhibitions including vovinam, judo, wushu, taekwondo, and traditional styles. High-performance athletes also interacted with the community to encourage regular physical activity.
Among the prominent athletes attending were medalists from the recent Asian Games (Asiad 20) held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, where Vietnam finished in 20th place with three gold, three silver, and 19 bronze medals,prensa-latina.cu noted.
Organizers set up dedicated spaces offering basic medical check-ups and consultations, guidance on training methods, and opportunities for attendees to sign commitments for regular physical exercise,prensa-latina.cu reported.
Additional sports activities are scheduled to continue on Sunday around the capital’s popular water bodies.
