CDU Official Defends Klöckner Amid Controversy Over Media Comparisons
Recent remarks by Bundestag President Bärbel Bas’s successor, Julia Klöckner, comparing the right-leaning news portal “Nius” to the left-leaning newspaper “taz” have sparked political debate. Responding to the criticism, CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann defended Klöckner, stating in the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” that the issue had not been raised with him outside of Berlin and suggesting a degree of local outlook was needed.
the controversy centers on Klöckner’s appearance as a speaker at a festival organized by the local CDU branch in Koblenz, hosted by “Compu Group Medical.” The company is owned by entrepreneur Frank Gotthardt, who is also a financial backer of “Nius” and has a long-standing relationship with Klöckner. Links between Klöckner and Gotthardt appear to be closer than previously understood.
The initial comparison drew criticism from across the political spectrum. Vizekanzler Klingbeil expressed disbelief that the late Wolfgang Schäuble, who served as President of the Bundestag until 2021, woudl have been involved in such a situation. Left party politician Janine Wissler has called for Klöckner to consider resigning from her position. Klöckner has faced previous controversies since assuming the presidency of the Bundestag.
