‘Vibe Coding’ Named Collins Dictionary’s Word of the Year, Reflecting AI’s Growing Influence
LONDON – “Vibe coding,” the practice of using emotive language to instruct artificial intelligence, has been crowned Collins dictionary’s Word of the Year, the publisher announced today, April 12, 2024. The selection reflects the increasing integration of AI into everyday life and a shift in how humans interact with technology.
The term, which gained prominence in software progress, describes the method of communicating desired outcomes to AI not thru precise code, but through descriptive “vibes” or feelings. This approach signals a move towards more accessible AI,allowing individuals without conventional coding skills to leverage the technology.
Alongside “vibe coding,” Collins highlighted a range of other newly popular words reflecting current cultural trends and anxieties. “Clanker,” a derogatory term for computers, robots,or AI,popularized by Star Wars: The Clone Wars, also made the list, demonstrating public frustration and distrust of AI chatbots and platforms.
Other additions to the Collins list include: “biohacking” (altering the body for health improvements), “glaze” (excessive flattery), “aura farming” (cultivating a charismatic persona), “broligarchy” (a nickname for tech company leaders), “Henry” (high earner, not rich yet), “coolcation” (a holiday in a cool climate), “taskmasking” (appearing productive at work), and “micro-retirement” (breaks between jobs for personal pursuits).
“The selection of vibe coding as Collins’ word of the year perfectly captures how language is evolving alongside technology,” said Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins. “It signals a major shift in software development, where AI is making coding more accessible. The seamless integration of human creativity and machine intelligence demonstrates how natural language is fundamentally changing our interaction with computers.”
