VGCCC Issues $58,000 in Fines too Victorian Venues for Holiday Trading Violations
Melbourne, Australia – November 29, 2025 – The Victorian Gambling and Casino control Commission (VGCCC) has levied $58,000 in fines and censures against 12 clubs and hotels across Victoria for violating permitted trading hours on Good Friday and ANZAC Day earlier this year. The announcement serves as a critical reminder to venues as the Christmas season approaches, urging them to confirm thier compliance with trading restrictions.
The VGCCC’s enforcement action underscores the importance of adhering to specific gaming trading hours, which are tied to individual liquor licenses. Investigations revealed poker machines were operating during prohibited hours at 12 venues on Good Friday, while the Kerang Bowling Club and The bridge Hotel in Mordialloc were found to have breached ANZAC Day restrictions. Nine venues received financial penalties, and three were censured.
“The festive season is just around the corner, and we appreciate it is an extremely busy time for clubs and hotels. That is why it is so important to check your trading hours are compliant now,” stated VGCCC CEO Suzy Neilan.
Clayton RSL received the largest fine, totaling $15,000, for a similar violation in 2024. The venue allowed gaming activity past 11:30 pm on Good Friday, resulting in a net turnover of $2,444. Last year, the VGCCC fined 11 venues a combined $180,000 for comparable breaches.
“Trading restrictions on days like Good Friday and ANZAC Day reflect the importance many peopel in the community place on these dates. It is important that we reflect community expectations surrounding these days and ensure that venues comply with the law,” Ms. Neilan added. “We’re committed to continuing to work with industry to ensure that Victoria’s gambling industry is fair for all – including the operators, so we are encouraging all venues to better understand their trading hour obligations on days of significance.”
