Vertical Video: Exploring the Rise of 9:16 Filmmaking | VPRO Vertical Video

March 25, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The VPRO is hosting a screening and discussion focused on vertical video, a format gaining traction as smartphone usage increases. The event, titled VPRO Vertical Video, will examine the creative opportunities and challenges presented by the 9×16 aspect ratio, a departure from the traditional 16×9 horizontal standard.

VPRO editor-in-chief Annelies Termeer will provide an overview of the genre, while host Deborah Fidder will lead a conversation with filmmakers Hannah Swart, Leon Wohlrabe, and Jikke de Gruijter. The event will feature a selection of vertical video shorts displayed on a conventional cinema screen.

Termeer currently serves as the editor-in-chief of VPRO Medialab, having been appointed to the role on April 1, 2026, succeeding Ton van Gool. Prior to this, she was a project leader within VPRO, involved in initiatives such as Hackathons, the online component of “We Know How You Feel,” and Blok22, a project exploring the Internet of Things and storytelling within smart homes.

The VPRO, an independent media organization with roots dating back to 1926, has a long history of innovation in media. The organization explores issues relevant to contemporary society and seeks new ways to engage audiences across various platforms, including television, radio, magazines, websites, and live events. VPRO Medialab specifically focuses on exploring storytelling possibilities with new technologies and fostering collaboration across disciplines.

Van Gool, Termeer’s predecessor, is transitioning to a new role as director of STRP, an organization promoting creative technology in Eindhoven. He was a founding member of STRP and has followed its development closely.

The event comes as vertical video becomes increasingly prevalent, driven by the widespread adoption of smartphones. The VPRO aims to accept the format seriously, exploring its potential for creative expression and addressing the unique challenges it presents to filmmakers.
