Venus Williams reacts

Venus Williams loses to Lilli Tagger at the Guangzhou Open

October 27, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Venus Williams lost her 16th match on Tuesday at the Guangzhou Open, falling 6-2, 6-2 to 18-year-old Austrian player Lilli Tagger in a contest featuring a 28-year-old age gap between opponents.

Tagger Dominates Williams in Historic Age Gap Match

The encounter stands as the largest age gap between opponents in a WTA match this decade and ranks among the largest in tour-level history. Williams, aged 46 and ranked 599th in the world, has not secured a match victory since July 2025. Tagger, the reigning 2025 French Open girls’ champion currently ranked 53rd globally, delivered a dominant performance on serve. She dropped just seven service points across the two identical sets and did not face a single break point, while breaking Williams’ serve twice.

Despite the straight-set scoreline, Williams used her powerful serve to escape trouble, fighting off 12 of 16 break points. Tagger noted her mixed emotions entering the fixture, stating When I saw the draw I was super excited and a bit nervous – I respect her a lot. Tagger also highlighted the historical link between the two generations, noting It is funny she used to play with my coach. I would love to play at this age – I want to congratulate her. Tagger’s coach, Italian former world number four Francesca Schiavone, is the same age as Williams and lost all eight of her career meetings against the American.

Williams Wildcard Entry Sparks Debate over Player Spots

The continuing defeats have reignited discussion over whether veteran players should rely on wildcards to enter WTA tournaments. Critics argue that these invitations occupy spots that could otherwise be utilized by younger players developing their careers. Conversely, tournament organizers point to the distinct commercial value of featuring an all-time great with seven Grand Slam singles titles.

The crowd in Guangzhou demonstrated strong support for the American superstar, offering enthusiastic encouragement during play and a loud ovation as she departed the court. While Williams’ trademark competitive spirit remains intact, the defeat highlights the ongoing gap between her current level and the rest of the tour.
