Venezuela Interim President Rodriguez to Visit US, Boosting Oil Ties

January 29, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A important shift ⁢in U.S.-Venezuela relations is underway as Delcy Rodríguez, ‍Venezuela’s executive vice president, is expected to visit the United States, according to a senior U.S. official who ‍spoke on Wednesday. This visit marks a departure from previous U.S. policy and signals President⁤ Trump’s willingness to engage directly with the Nicolás Maduro government.

The primary driver behind this change appears to be the U.S. interest in ⁤gaining access‍ to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, estimated at 303.8 billion barrels . The U.S. has been seeking to bolster it’s energy security, especially in light of global supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions.

For years, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on Venezuela,‍ recognizing Juan Guaidó ‍as the legitimate interim president. Though, ⁤the Biden administration has signaled ⁤a willingness to reassess its approach, seeking a more⁣ pragmatic strategy. In November 2022, the U.S.⁢ allowed Chevron to resume limited oil extraction in Venezuela , a move that indicated ⁤a softening stance.

Rodríguez’s visit is expected to focus on discussions regarding oil production, potential sanctions relief, ⁣and the possibility of‍ free and fair⁢ elections⁤ in Venezuela. The U.S. government has stated that any easing of sanctions is contingent upon progress towards democratic reforms .

This engagement doesn’t represent a full endorsement of the Maduro regime. The U.S. continues to have concerns about ⁤human rights abuses and political repression in Venezuela. However, officials believe that direct dialogue is necessary to⁢ address the complex challenges facing both countries and to explore potential solutions to the ongoing humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela.

The outcome of Rodríguez’s visit remains uncertain, but it ‍represents a crucial step in a potentially evolving relationship between the U.S. and⁤ Venezuela. Experts ⁤suggest that a successful outcome could lead to⁣ increased oil supplies, easing energy prices,⁣ and ⁤a more stable political situation in the region .
