van Hanegem Questions PSV’s Response to Losses, Criticizes Ajax‘s Form
Feyenoord legend Willem van Hanegem has delivered a scathing assessment of both PSV and Ajax, focusing particularly on what he perceives as a concerning lack of reaction to recent poor form at PSV. In his column for the Algemeen Dagblad, Van Hanegem described PSV as “a mystery,” questioning the club’s acceptance of losing streaks.
“That club has one advantage: if you lose four times in a row, people around the club sometimes get angry. But if they have concluded that it is fine, then they are wrong,” Van Hanegem wrote. He specifically pointed to PSV’s performance against Excelsior, stating, “What they showed against Excelsior was nothing special. Anyway,it wasn’t as bad as Ajax.”
Van hanegem didn’t spare Ajax from criticism either, stating, “Ajax is so bad that you think you’re being fooled.” he also commented on ajax’s reported interest in Thomas Duivenvoorden, the assistant trainer of De Graafschap, currently 15th in the first division, noting Duivenvoorden had “done pretty well with Swift Boys.”
Despite acknowledging that Feyenoord’s own performance against FC Groningen wasn’t “great,” Van Hanegem believes the win was deserved given the opponent. He predicts Feyenoord is poised to overtake both PSV and Ajax in the league standings, stating,”If you look at the top clubs this weekend, you can’t otherwise conclude that Feyenoord seems to get a wonderful chance on the national title.” However, he conceded this hope isn’t entirely based on Feyenoord’s convincing play, admitting, “Feyenoord is also in no way convincing.”
Van Hanegem’s overall assessment suggests he believes the struggles of PSV and Ajax present a significant opportunity for Feyenoord to challenge for the national title this season.
