Federico Valverde’s burgeoning playmaking role at Real Madrid reached a novel milestone Wednesday, as the Uruguayan midfielder secured his ninth assist of the season in the Champions League round of 16 victory over Benfica. Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Vinicius Jr., both set up by Valverde, propelled Real Madrid to a 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu and a 3-1 aggregate triumph.
Valverde’s assist for Tchouameni’s 16th-minute equalizer, which cancelled out Rafa Silva’s earlier goal for Benfica, marked his fourth in the Champions League this campaign. He has too registered five assists in LaLiga, bringing his season total to nine – surpassing his previous best of six assists during the 2022-23 season.
The 25-year-old’s creative output has been remarkably diverse, connecting with seven different teammates for goals this season. Vinicius Jr. Has benefited most from Valverde’s vision, receiving three assists (against Benfica, Osasuna and Levante). Tchouameni, Kylian Mbappé (against Monaco), Jude Bellingham (also against Monaco), Rodrygo (against Atlético), Gonzalo (against Betis), and Fran García (against Betis) have each received one assist from the Uruguayan.
Throughout his time with Real Madrid, Valverde has now accumulated a total of 31 assists. His recent form has been a key component of the team’s success, providing a consistent creative spark from midfield. Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, was also highlighted as a crucial performer in the tie, making a series of impressive saves despite conceding a goal at the Bernabéu, according to reports.
The victory over Benfica secures Real Madrid’s place in the Champions League round of 16, where they will face either Sporting CP or Manchester City. The draw for the next round is scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026.
