Valerie Perrine: ‘Superman’ Actress Dies at 82 – Net Worth & Life Details

March 24, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Valerie Perrine, the actress known for her roles in Superman and Lenny, died Monday at her home in Beverly Hills, California, following a 15-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, according to a report from Deadline.

Perrine was 82 years old. Her death was announced by friend Stacey Souther, who has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses.

Born Valerie Ritchie Perrine on September 3, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, Perrine began her career as a Las Vegas showgirl in 1968 before transitioning to acting. She gained recognition for her role as Montana Wildhack in George Roy Hill’s film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, telling a reporter in 2025, “That’s how I became an actress.”

Perrine received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Honey Bruce, the wife of comedian Lenny Bruce, in Bob Fosse’s 1974 biopic, Lenny. She also won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for the same role. Newsweek reported that the performance cemented her status as a breakout talent of the era.

She further rose to prominence playing Eve Teschmacher, Lex Luthor’s assistant, in Richard Donner’s 1978 film Superman, alongside Gene Hackman. She reprised the role in Superman II (1980). The character of Eve Teschmacher was created specifically for the film adaptation and did not appear in the original comic books.

Later in her career, Perrine appeared in numerous television projects, including a role in the PBS production Steambath in 1973, which is noted for featuring one of the first instances of nude female breasts on network television. She also had a recurring role on “Homicide: Life on the Street.”

Perrine publicly discussed her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease and was the subject of a 2020 short documentary, “Valerie,” which chronicled her career and health challenges. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the disease significantly impacted her ability to eat and speak.

Reports indicate that Perrine faced financial difficulties later in life, selling her home after a series of unsuccessful business ventures. A former boyfriend, Nels Van Patten, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, “She doesn’t have any money.”

Valerie Perrine never married and did not have any children. She is survived by a brother who also has Parkinson’s disease.
