Patagonian Race Prioritizes Pristine Landscape, Runner Responsibility
PUERTO MADRYN, ARGENTINA – November 13, 2024 – A unique trail running event, Valdés Extremo, is set to take place this weekend on the Península Valdés, emphasizing a deep connection with nature adn a commitment to environmental preservation. Organizers promise a race experience unlike any other, specifically designed to minimize human impact on the fragile Patagonian ecosystem.
“Where you will not meet anyone,” explained Mario gadda, one of the event organizers, highlighting the private course devoid of both spectators and vehicular traffic. The circuits, built from existing trekking and mountain biking routes, weave through dunes, guanaco trails, and offer panoramic ocean views.”The idea is for runners to enjoy nature as Peninsula Valdés is, without human interference,” Gadda stated.
Valdés Extremo distinguishes itself through its ecological practices. Instead of conventional plastic markers, the institution utilizes reusable wooden stakes, removed instantly after runners pass, leaving no trace. Strict regulations will be enforced, with disqualification awaiting any participant who discards waste – even organic matter. “Throwing a gel or a banana peel does not make you faster. Nature does not have to pay for that,” Gadda emphasized.
Runners will begin their race on Sunday, November 16th, from the beach in Puerto Pirámides. Start times are scheduled as follows: 24K and 12K at 9:30 hs, and the 6K at 10:00 hs. The course immediately ascends Olazábal hill, immersing participants in the peninsula’s dramatic cliffs, potential whale sightings, and expansive silence.
Mandatory accreditation and a technical briefing will be held on Saturday, November 15th, at the Rayentray Hotel in Puerto Madryn (Arenas room), beginning at 10:00 and running until 17:00. The briefing will commence at 4:00 p.m. Required documentation for kit collection includes DNI (national ID),a signed disclaimer (available on the official Valdés Extremo website),and a medical certificate confirming physical fitness.
Gadda underscored the event’s broader purpose: “We want those who don’t know to take away the image of an incredible corner of Patagonia, and for those who already know it to understand that it must be taken care of. If we don’t preserve it, there is no future.” valdés Extremo aims to be more than just a race; it’s a call to conscious engagement with the Patagonian landscape.
