Paul Beattie, a former UVF member, remains defiant despite ongoing threats to his life.
News in 90 Seconds – August 6th
BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Former Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) member Paul Beattie is reportedly facing continued threats, yet maintains he will not be displaced from his home. The threats underscore the enduring tensions within Northern Ireland’s loyalist paramilitary groups, even decades after the Good friday Agreement.
Beattie and an associate were apprehended by the Royal Ulster constabulary (RUC) following an attempted murder in West Belfast in the early 1990s. The incident occurred near the Falls Road area, a historically republican stronghold.
He was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment – 11 years for the attempted murder and an additional three years for a concurrent armed robbery conviction. Beattie has consistently asserted that he was deliberately framed by elements within the UVF, believing he was targeted due to internal power struggles.
