Uttarkashi cloudburst LIVE: Flash floods in Uttarakhand leave four dead; over 60 feared trapped

Uttarakhand Floods Unleash Devastation in Harsil

Flash Floods Triggered by Cloudburst Cause Widespread Disruption

Devastating flash floods have struck the Harsil area of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, following a powerful cloudburst. Roads are currently impassable in several locations, hampering rescue efforts.

Rescue Operations Underway Amidst Road Blockages

Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament for Tehri Garhwal, confirmed that rescue teams are en route to the affected region. However, progress is slowed by blocked routes, adding to the challenging situation.

“This incident is even bigger than the one which took place in 2013. Help from the centre and the state is being sent. Rescue teams are also on the way, but it is taking time because the roads are blocked in some places, it is an unfortunate incident.”

The sheer scale of the disaster has been likened to the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, underscoring the severity of the current event.

“Tragic” Incident with Potential for Major Losses

Trivendra Singh, the BJP MP from Hardwar, described the event as “tragic,” noting the “horrifying” visuals emerging from Harsil. He indicated expectations of significant losses but suggested the situation could have been more dire.

“It’s a tragic incident; the visuals that we saw are horrifying. There is an expectation of major loss, but it could have been worse. A fair was held near the Dharali village, which attracted many people, and as a result, many were able to save their lives. We still don’t know the death toll, The NDRF team has gone there, and the SDRF team has already reached there.”

The presence of a fair near Dharali village, prior to the flash floods, is believed to have allowed many individuals to escape the immediate impact of the deluge.

Emergency Response Mobilized

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been dispatched to the area, while the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has already arrived on the scene. These teams are working to reach the affected communities despite the transportation challenges.

Cloudbursts, which involve extremely heavy rainfall over a short period, can lead to rapid and destructive flash floods, particularly in mountainous regions like Uttarakhand. For instance, a study by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi highlighted that such events can increase by up to 70% in the Himalayas due to climate change (Down To Earth, 2023).
