EDINBURG,Texas - The UTRGV vaqueros men’s golf team concluded a prosperous fall season marked by depth, individual highlights, and a clear understanding of their potential,Head Coach Jeff Moore said. Despite a competitive roster where five players averaged 72 or better, the team demonstrated capability for high performance heading into the spring season.
The Vaqueros showcased strong individual performances throughout the fall. Jorge Mariscal recorded rounds of 63 and 64 during a tournament, while Rodolphe Serrano achieved two top-five finishes.Esteban Gonzalez and Gabriel Palacios also contributed positively, and Emilio Gil Leyva competed on the PGA Tour. The team’s standout team performance came at SMU, where they shot 13 under par in the second round.
“It’s been tough,” Moore stated. “We have five guys that are averaging around 72 or better, so we are the deepest we have been since I have gotten here. It’s been tough to get in the van or plane, that’s for sure. It makes qualifying that much harder, but at that point, we are only as good as our sixth player.I think this year we have a talented bench.”
Moore emphasized the importance of consistent performance, noting the team needs to “get in sequence.” He expressed optimism about the team’s potential, stating, “The biggest takeaway from the fall is that we can, that we are capable…I think I would rather have it that way. I would rather figure out our lineup and our team in the fall and realize that we are capable and move to the spring and see what we can do.”
Looking ahead, Moore stressed the need for continued hard work during the winter break. “The writing is on the wall,” he said. “You better work hard this offseason because the guys that didn’t make every tournament in the fall is going to work hard during the break to get a spot in the spring. I think everyone knows that if you put the work then you will have an opportunity or you will take someone’s opportunity.”
