HONOLULU, HI – The Utah State Aggies fell to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 44-26 in a Mountain West Conference road contest on Saturday, October 10th. The loss drops Utah State to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Hawaii improves to 2-4 and 1-1 in the MW.
The game began with a series of punts and field goals,with Utah State’s tanner Rinker connecting from 20 yards to tie the score. Hawaii responded with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Micah Alejado to Pofele Ashlock.The Aggies answered with a seven-play, 47-yard drive culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by M. Davis. Utah State then took the lead on a trick play, as Cooper Jacobs hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Garcia.Alejado then threw touchdown passes of seven and 31 yards to ashlock,sandwiching a 40-yard field goal by Rinker,sending Hawaii into halftime with a 24-20 advantage.
A failed onside kick to start the second half gave Utah State favorable field position, which thay capitalized on with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Barnes to Lane. A blocked PAT shifted momentum back to Hawaii, who then scored 20 unanswered points on two rushing touchdowns and a pair of field goals. Despite driving into Hawaii territory twice in the fourth quarter, the aggies were unable to complete a comeback.
Defensively, Brevin Hamblin led Utah State with eight total tackles, while Ike Larsen, making his season debut, recorded seven tackles. Mataira Brown and D’Angelo Mayes each added 0.5 sacks. Mayes also recorded his second interception of the season.
Utah State returns to Maverik Stadium to host San Jose State on Friday,October 17th,at 7 p.m. (MT). the game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
