Vienna Sees Surge in Used Electric Car demand
Vienna is experiencing a significant rise in teh popularity of used electric vehicles, especially among young, educated residents. Demand for used “Streamers” – the Austrian term for electric cars – has increased by around 70 percent since the beginning of 2023, according to an evaluation of the Autoscout24 platform.
This growing interest coincides with a drop in average prices for used electric cars in Austria, falling from 52,800 euros to approximately 41,200 euros over the same period. Simultaneously, the number of used electric vehicles available on the market has doubled, increasing from around 4,500 to over 10,000 listings.
The trend is particularly pronounced among 18- to 24-year-olds, with over 25 percent reporting increased openness to electric vehicles – considerably higher than the national average of 17 percent. Higher education levels also correlate with greater interest, with 20 percent of those surveyed indicating a growing inclination towards electric cars. Vienna leads the country in this shift.
Popular models in the used market include Tesla vehicles, the Audi E-tron,Renault Zoe,and VW ID.3. A recent Autoscout24 survey conducted by Norstat found that 17 percent of Viennese residents now express increased willingness to purchase a used electric car, with over a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds showing a greater inclination.
Experts at ÖAMTC advise potential buyers to prioritize a thorough inspection of the vehicle battery, as its condition is critical for range. While most manufacturers offer an eight-year battery guarantee, ÖAMTC also provides battery checks for used electric cars. Despite these considerations, ÖAMTC views purchasing a used electric car as a reliable, sustainable, and economically sound decision.
