US, UK, and Canada Issue Travel Warnings for Riyadh Airport Following Attacks

October 11, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada issued travel warnings advising citizens to avoid Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport following attacks, Hürriyet reported. The alerts arrive as fighting between Houthi forces and the Saudi Arabia-backed government intensifies across Yemen, marked by airstrikes and severe humanitarian restrictions.

Travel Advisories Issued for Riyadh Following Airport Attacks

The embassies and foreign offices of the US, UK, and Canada posted alerts on social media platforms warning travelers and diplomatic personnel about the security situation at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The US Embassy instructed all American citizens to stay away from the airport and surrounding sectors. US government employees stationed in Saudi Arabia require special authorization to use the facility, and personnel remain barred from approaching within 20 miles of the Yemen border.

Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) directed citizens to steer clear of the airfield and comply strictly with instructions issued by Saudi authorities. Meanwhile, the Canadian Embassy in Riyadh highlighted that military activity is actively disrupting travel operations. Canadian officials explicitly urged citizens to avoid the airport entirely and warned individuals to stay away from any debris or shrapnel, cautioning against sharing wreckage photos or videos on social media.

Coalition Airstrikes and Ground Fighting Intensify in Yemen

This ongoing war dates back to September 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthis seized effective control of Sana’a before formally taking over the government in 2015. At the request of then-President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi, regional Arab states formed a coalition that launched military operations on March 25, 2015. The conflict has triggered a profound humanitarian crisis, resulting in more than 300,000 deaths.

The ministry emphasized that the cutoff of basic supplies directly threatens patients, wounded individuals, pregnant women, and newborns. Without fuel to run electrical generators, hospitals risk losing cold-storage capabilities required for vaccines and medications. The ongoing blockade began after Houthi units advanced from the Red Sea port city of Hudeyde toward Taiz and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, intensifying battles in the mountainous region.

Houthi Movement Emerges from Local Religious and Political Revivals

Analysts examining the roots of the conflict emphasize the domestic origins of the movement alongside its external alliances. Research indicates that the Ansarullah movement—commonly referred to as the Houthis—maintains local roots, emerging from Zaydi religious and political revivals in northern Yemen, opposing both domestic governance and foreign intervention, Medyascope reported. While international observers document Iranian backing in weapons, intelligence, and training, specialists caution that viewing the group merely as a proxy misses the complex topography, rugged terrain, and localized grievances that sustain their resistance under sustained bombardment.

As diplomatic channels stall and military engagements expand from border airfields to maritime bottlenecks, the conflict continues to shape regional security calculations and international travel safety across the Arabian Peninsula.
