US Threatens Iran Over Strait of Hormuz – 48-Hour Ultimatum

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump issued a stark ultimatum to Iran on Sunday, threatening military action if Tehran does not “fully” open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. The demand, delivered without specific details regarding the conditions for acceptable access, escalates tensions already heightened by a deepening conflict in the region and a stalled diplomatic effort to de-escalate the situation.

The threat comes as Trump’s planned trip to Beijing appears increasingly uncertain, according to reports. The Washington Post reported on Sunday that China has ignored Trump’s request for assistance regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. This lack of support from Beijing further complicates the U.S. Position as it seeks to build a coalition to secure maritime traffic through the vital waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes through the strait daily. Iran has repeatedly threatened to disrupt shipping in the region in response to sanctions imposed by the United States.

The Trump administration has been actively attempting to assemble an international coalition to patrol the Strait of Hormuz, following a series of attacks on oil tankers in the area which the U.S. Has blamed on Iran. However, several nations, including Germany, have publicly declined to participate. Il Sole 24 ORE reported that Berlin has stated it “will not participate” in any U.S.-led coalition.

Iran has responded to the U.S. Efforts with increasingly belligerent rhetoric. Il Sole 24 ORE also reported that Iranian officials have directly criticized NATO, labeling its members as “cowards” and vowing to remember their perceived inaction. This statement followed reports from the Wall Street Journal indicating that the U.S. Is preparing to deploy thousands of additional Marines to the Middle East.

The 48-hour deadline issued by President Trump raises the prospect of a direct military confrontation between the United States and Iran. The precise nature of the U.S. Response should Iran fail to comply remains unclear. As of Sunday evening, Iranian officials have not publicly responded to the ultimatum.
