US Teen Detained by ICE Speaks Out | CNN Español
A U.S. Teenager detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis alleges she was shackled by federal agents despite being a U.S. Citizen. CNN’s Sara Sidner reported on the case Friday, speaking with the teen and another individual detained by ICE.
The incident occurred amidst heightened scrutiny of ICE practices and a partial government shutdown impacting the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), leading to staffing shortages and travel disruptions across the country. Hundreds of TSA workers are reportedly working without full pay, with some quitting or taking unscheduled time off.
The detention of the U.S. Citizen teen follows a recent shooting involving an ICE agent. On January 25, 2026, ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Nicole Quality in Minneapolis, sparking ongoing protests. During a live report from the protest site, CNN’s Sara Sidner experienced difficulty breathing, reportedly due to tear gas and was forced to cut short her broadcast. Sidner was heard coughing and struggling to speak, stating, “I’m trying to breathe. Hold on.”
The protests have prompted calls for significant changes to ICE. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, in an interview with CNN, called for the agency to be “abolished” and “replaced.”
Simultaneously, the U.S. Is increasing its military presence in the Middle East, with thousands of additional Marines and sailors being deployed as the war with Iran enters its fourth week. This deployment adds to the complex geopolitical landscape facing the Biden administration.
As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, Congress is attempting to reach a deal to reopen the Department of Homeland Security, which remains partially shut down due to funding disputes.
