US measles cases outpace 2024 totals, CDC data shows

October 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Measles cases in the United States have surpassed totals from previous years, driven by rising infections in Pennsylvania, Texas, and South Carolina, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • Measles cases reached at least 4,410 confirmed infections across 42 outbreaks as of Oct. 15, 2026, nearly doubling the total from 2025.
  • Discrepancies between federal tracking and state reporting emerged as Pennsylvania documented five deaths and a sixth under investigation, while the federal dashboard initially listed fewer fatalities.
  • The World Health Organization is slated to review the elimination status of the United States in November 2026, following a continuous transmission period that threatens a designation held since 2000.

Surging Infections Outpace Prior Years as Pennsylvania Bears the Heaviest Toll

By most metrics, measles in the U.S. is out of control, according to salon.com. During the past week alone, infections climbed by 8% with 330 new cases documented, eclipsing the entire 2024 count recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when they tallied 285 cases. While large outbreaks have struck Texas and South Carolina, Pennsylvania has been hit especially hard with over 1,300 cases and 250 hospitalizations reported this year. Public health officials caution that the true number of infections is likely higher due to underreporting, potentially reaching 6,000 cases.

“We’ve seen more measles cases during this report than we’ve seen in the last quarter century — combined,” Noel Brewer, a professor of public health at the University of North Carolina, told POLITICO. Prior to the committee being overhauled by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Brewer had been a member of a vital CDC vaccine advisory panel. The highly contagious viral disease is characterized by a distinct rash and can cause pneumonia, blindness, and swelling in the brain, while erasing the immune system’s memory to trigger secondary infections. Globally, measles vaccination averted roughly 59 million deaths between 2000 and 2024, as reported by the World Health Organization. Between 2000 and 2024, vaccination prevented an estimated 59 million deaths globally.

Measles Cases Surge in the U.S., Surpassing 2024 Totals

Discrepancies Emerge Between Federal Dashboards and State Mortality Data

Criticism has mounted over how federal health authorities track fatalities. The federal measles dashboard lists three deaths, adding one on a Wednesday, but Pennsylvania alone has reported five deaths this year with a sixth under investigation. Erica Schwartz, the director of the CDC, received a correspondence from Pennsylvania Health Secretary Debra Bogen asking for the state’s fatalities to be included and seeking clarifications regarding their tracking protocols. “By not acknowledging the deaths, the CDC obscures the seriousness of this disease and the toll of measles across the U.S.,” Bogen wrote. Reuters reported in September that Kennedy asked Schwartz to remove two measles deaths from the CDC dashboard, a request implemented without objection before the numbers were later added back with an asterisk indicating figures are subject to change.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro publicly blamed Kennedy and the administration for sowing doubt about vaccines. In Virginia Beach, Virginia, an aide tried to stop a reporter from asking Kennedy about the Pennsylvania deaths during a healthcare roundtable, prompting the reporter to snap, “He’s the highest-ranking health official in the country! He can answer that question! Kennedy defended his record by pointing to global outbreaks, stating, “We have done better and particularly my administration has done better at controlling the outbreak than any other country in the world.” He also accused Shapiro of politicizing the outbreak and refusing federal help, though state officials maintained assistance was initially declined because the CDC was not counting deaths accurately.”

Vulnerability and Policy Pressures Shape National Immunization Programs

The unfolding crisis highlights systemic vulnerabilities across public health infrastructure. Protect Our Care noted that NBC News reported 66 pregnant women have contracted measles since the outbreak began in April, raising concerns over congenital infections. Meanwhile, a June study published in JAMA Network linked unproven remedies like vitamin A and cod liver oil—advocated by Kennedy—to an increase in calls to poison control for vitamin A exposure. Data from an Axios-Ipsos poll suggests only one in four people trust health information originating from Kennedy. As the Pan American Health Organization prepares to review the elimination status of the United States in November 2026, healthcare policy experts Steven Grossman and Michael Miller wrote in MedPage Today that restoring public trust and protecting vaccination rates will require sustained legislative and regulatory efforts stretching toward 2029 and beyond.
