US-Israel Divide on Iran Strategy Deepens: Trump, Netanyahu Disagreements

March 20, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump publicly distanced himself from Israel’s recent strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, telling reporters Thursday that he “neither agreed with nor approved of” the action, a marked divergence from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that Israel “acted alone.” The exchange, reported by the Associated Press and The Independent, underscores a growing rift between the two leaders as the conflict in the Middle East nears its third week.

During an Oval Office meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Trump stated he had cautioned Netanyahu against the strike. “I told him, ‘Don’t do that,’” Trump said, adding that while the relationship is generally “coordinated,” he sometimes disagrees with Netanyahu’s decisions. “We receive along great… but on occasion he’ll do something. And if I don’t like it – and so we’re not doing that anymore.”

Netanyahu, speaking at a press conference in Jerusalem, sought to downplay any disagreement, stating Israel acted unilaterally and had agreed to Trump’s request to refrain from further attacks on the gas field. He reiterated his long-held view that Iran poses a threat to Israel and the world, a sentiment he noted Trump shares. “For 40 years, I’ve been saying that Iran is a danger to Israel and a danger to the world. That is true,” Netanyahu said. “You know who else said that? President Trump.”

The strike on the South Pars field, a critical energy lifeline for Iran, immediately prompted retaliatory strikes from Tehran against energy infrastructure in other Middle Eastern nations, escalating regional tensions and driving up global energy prices. According to CBS News, international standard Brent crude is trading around $107 a barrel, a more than 47% increase since the conflict began on February 28th. Gulf allies have reportedly urged Trump to restrain Netanyahu’s actions in light of the escalating situation.

The emerging disagreement between Trump and Netanyahu raises questions about the synchronicity of their war aims, particularly as the conflict began as a closely coordinated joint effort. The New York Times and Politico have reported on the growing concerns within the administration regarding differing objectives. Trump, in a separate statement reported by CBS News, slammed NATO allies as “cowards” for not contributing to securing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit route currently disrupted by Iran’s retaliation.

The U.S. Is reportedly attempting to establish contact with Iranian leadership, but Trump stated Friday that “there’s nobody to talk to” as key leaders have been removed. He added that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine are “doing a great job.”

While both Trump and Netanyahu have publicly stated their shared goal of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, the head of the U.N. Nuclear watchdog agency told CBS News that securing Iran’s enriched uranium will be “particularly challenging,” even after the fighting ceases. Thousands of additional U.S. Marines and three warships are being deployed to the Middle East, according to two U.S. Officials, as the conflict continues with no clear path to de-escalation.
