US-Iran Tensions Rise: Threat to Strait of Hormuz & Regional Infrastructure

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran on Saturday, threatening to strike Iranian electrical infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened to international shipping. The former president, writing on his social media platform, specifically threatened the “total and complete” destruction of Iran’s power plants, beginning with its largest facility.

The threat escalates tensions already simmering between the United States and Iran, with Tehran warning of retaliatory strikes against critical infrastructure across the Middle East. According to reports, Iranian officials have stated that any attack on their facilities will be met with responses targeting energy and electrical infrastructure throughout the region, potentially “putting the Middle East in the dark.”

Pierre Berthelot, director of the review “Orients stratégiques,” described the situation as a “balance of terror,” noting Iran’s determination to respond forcefully. “The Iranians also have the means to retaliate and strike all of the region’s energy and electrical infrastructure,” Berthelot said. “They have promised to put the Middle East in the dark. So, there is a kind of balance of terror: who will crack first?”

The Iranian parliament president issued a statement Sunday, warning that critical infrastructure – energy and oil facilities – in the entire region would be considered legitimate targets should Iran be attacked. An image circulated by Iranian news agencies depicted potential targets, including power plants in Gulf states, accompanied by the caption “Goodbye to electricity.” Tehran also threatened attacks on desalination plants, which are vital for water supplies in the region, including providing 99% of Qatar’s potable water.

The United States, according to reports, is considering a “gradual reduction” of its military operations in Iran, though the timing and scope of any such reduction remain unclear. Trump’s latest statement appears to contradict any potential de-escalation efforts.

In a State of the Union address earlier, Trump had already threatened Iran, prompting a response from Tehran comparing him to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, according to France 24 reports. The current escalation follows a period of increased friction, with Trump previously downplaying the impact of rising gas prices linked to the conflict with Iran, stating, “We make a lot of money.”
