US-Iran Talks: Pakistan Emerges as Potential Meeting Location | CNN

March 24, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Islamabad is emerging as a potential host for direct talks between the United States and Iran, even as Tehran publicly denies recent assertions by President Trump of “productive conversations” aimed at de-escalating tensions. The possibility of a meeting gained traction following Pakistan’s offer to facilitate negotiations, with sources suggesting a gathering could occur as early as later this week.

According to two sources familiar with the discussions, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance could potentially attend a meeting in Islamabad. However, Pakistani officials, while confirming their willingness to host, have remained notably reserved about specifics, citing the sensitive nature of the diplomatic efforts.

Several factors position Pakistan as a strategically advantageous location for such talks. The country shares a substantial border and deep cultural and religious ties with Iran, including a large Shia Muslim population. Unlike several Gulf states, Pakistan does not host U.S. Military bases and has not been targeted by Iranian missile or drone attacks, avoiding the regional friction that could complicate negotiations elsewhere. Iran has permitted some of its vessels passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies.

The renewed interest in Pakistan as a diplomatic hub also coincides with a strengthening relationship between Islamabad and the Trump administration. Washington has expressed growing interest in Pakistan’s claimed reserves of rare earth minerals and critical resources. President Trump has also fostered a close working relationship with Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, whom he has publicly referred to as his “favorite field marshal.” During a meeting last summer, Trump reportedly stated that “Pakistanis understand Iran very well, better than most.”

Pakistan itself has significant incentives to promote de-escalation in the region. As a nation of 230 million people heavily reliant on Middle Eastern energy supplies, it is particularly vulnerable to the economic and security consequences of prolonged regional conflict.

While Iranian officials have publicly refuted President Trump’s claims of ongoing dialogue, the possibility of indirect communication through Pakistani mediation remains a key focus of diplomatic efforts. The timing and location of any potential meeting remain uncertain, and Pakistani officials continue to maintain a cautious public stance.
