US Government Faces Potential Paralysis as Budget Talks Stall

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

WASHINGTON – The U.S. ‍federal government is “probably” headed for a shutdown⁣ in a matter of⁤ hours, former President Donald⁤ Trump said Tuesday, as negotiations between ⁤republicans and Democrats over government funding remain stalled. The⁣ looming shutdown comes as Republicans demand notable budget cuts and democrats resist dismantling aspects of the American health system. Hakeem Jeffries, chief of the Democrat minority in ‌the House of Representatives, stated Tuesday, “we ⁣have the will and the ability to ⁢find a way of understanding. But we will not ‌support a republican partisan bill which continues to dismantle the American health system, nor ever.”

this isn’t the first time a government shutdown has threatened to disrupt federal⁣ services. In March, Republicans⁤ refused to negotiate on budget cuts and the potential dismissal of thousands of civil ‌servants, prompting ten Democratic Senators, ⁤including Chuck Schumer, to reluctantly vote for ⁢a Republican-backed bill⁤ to avert a shutdown. That decision ‌sparked criticism within the democratic‍ party, with some accusing leaders of conceding to Trump’s ‌agenda.

The ⁤current impasse centers on funding⁢ levels for various government agencies and policy riders ‍attached to spending bills. Without a resolution, non-essential government services ⁢could be suspended, impacting federal employees and potentially ⁤disrupting services for citizens.
