Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges in 2023 Despite Economic Challenges
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced that global renewable energy capacity additions reached a record high in 2023, with solar and wind leading the charge. The agency’s World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023 highlights that over 300 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable capacity was installed last year, marking a 14% increase from 2022.
“The momentum for renewables is undeniable,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “Even in the face of economic uncertainties, governments and investors are prioritizing clean energy transitions. The data shows that renewables are not just growing—they are becoming the backbone of our energy systems.”

Solar power accounted for nearly 60% of all new installations, with China, the United States, and India contributing the largest shares. Wind energy also saw significant growth, particularly in offshore projects, which expanded by over 20% in Europe alone.
The report underscores that renewables now provide more than 30% of the world’s electricity, up from just 25% in 2020. This shift is critical as the global community works to meet the Paris Agreement targets and limit temperature rises to 1.5°C.
The surge in renewable energy installations comes as fossil fuel dependence remains stubbornly high. According to the report, coal-fired power plants still generate nearly 35% of global electricity, though their share has been slowly declining. Meanwhile, battery storage capacity has grown exponentially, with deployments increasing by more than 50% in 2023.
"The cost of renewables continues to drop, making them the most economical choice for new power generation in most regions. However, financing gaps and regulatory hurdles remain significant barriers."
The report also projects that if current trends continue, renewables could supply 60% of global electricity by 2030, up from 30% today. This would represent a tripling of renewable capacity over the next seven years.
Regional disparities remain a challenge. While Europe and parts of Asia have made rapid progress, sub-Saharan Africa still relies on renewables for less than 10% of its electricity, with millions lacking access to any grid-connected power.
