A bill introduced by Rhode Island State Representative Marie Hopkins would authorize the University of Rhode Island (URI) to establish schools of medicine and dentistry, a proposal gaining traction within the state’s political landscape. The legislation, currently under consideration, aims to address healthcare access and workforce shortages in Rhode Island.
Hopkins, a Republican representing the 21st district since 2025, formally proposed the measure, which seeks to leverage URI’s existing infrastructure and academic strengths to create the new professional schools on its Kingston campus. A Senate-led special legislative commission concluded in January that URI was well-positioned to undertake the expansion, according to reports.
The proposal comes as Rhode Island faces ongoing challenges in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals. Proponents argue that establishing medical and dental schools within the state would not only increase the pipeline of qualified practitioners but also stimulate economic growth and research opportunities.
Hopkins won re-election in November 2024, defeating James McElroy in the general election for the 21st district. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 2007 and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island in 2017.
The Rhode Island House of Representatives currently has a Democratic majority, with Joe Shekarchi serving as Speaker of the House. The bill’s success will likely depend on securing bipartisan support and navigating the legislative process within the General Assembly. As of Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the bill’s status remains under review by the House committee.
