New York, NY - October 3, 2025 – A former doorman on the Upper West Side was sentenced today to 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing nearly $480,000 from elderly residents over a three-year period. The case highlights the vulnerability of seniors to financial exploitation and underscores the importance of vigilance within residential buildings.
Between 2022 and 2025,Victor Delgado,34,abused his position of trust to pilfer checks and cash from residents of a building on West 86th Street. Delgado exploited his access to mail and building services to intercept and cash checks, and directly steal money from residents, primarily targeting individuals over the age of 65. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office initiated the examination following complaints from residents and the building’s management.
“This defendant systematically preyed on vulnerable elderly residents, betraying their trust for personal gain,” stated Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in a press release. “This sentence sends a clear message that we will vigorously prosecute those who target seniors for financial exploitation.”
Prosecutors detailed how Delgado used the stolen funds for personal expenses, including travel and entertainment. The investigation revealed a pattern of fraudulent activity, wiht Delgado forging signatures and altering checks to conceal his crimes. He was arrested in March 2025 and subsequently pleaded guilty to grand larceny and forgery charges.
As part of the sentencing, Delgado was ordered to pay full restitution to the victims. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s Elder Fraud Unit continues to investigate potential additional victims and encourages anyone with information to come forward. Residents and building staff are reminded to report any suspicious activity immediately.
