UPES Integrates ChatGPT: AI-Powered Education Campus-Wide
The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) in Dehradun, India, has partnered with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT Edu across its entire campus, a move intended to integrate artificial intelligence into teaching, research, and student services, according to a LinkedIn post published Tuesday by Analytics India Magazine.
The rollout will provide access to generative AI tools for all students, faculty, and staff, supported by administrative controls and enterprise-grade security. UPES aims to embed AI across academic and operational processes, according to a statement released by the university and reported by BW Education.
The initiative includes an AI tutor aligned with coursework, tools for concept clarification, and multilingual assistance. Frameworks will also be introduced to support academic integrity while enabling responsible AI employ in learning and assessment. Student services will be enhanced through AI-enabled guidance systems designed to provide policy information and route complex inquiries to administrative teams.
A Responsible AI Charter will govern usage norms, privacy, and data handling. The deployment will also provide access to advanced research tools to support literature review, data analysis, and academic inquiry, assisting faculty in reducing administrative workload and focusing on mentoring and research.
“We are excited to be one of the pioneering Indian universities to commit to a governed, campus-wide GenAI deployment at this scale—treating AI as core academic and service infrastructure, not a series of experiments,” said Sunil Rai, Vice Chancellor of UPES, as reported by Analytics India Magazine.
Raghav Gupta noted that India already has the largest student community on ChatGPT, suggesting that initiatives like this will further integrate AI into everyday learning experiences, according to the same LinkedIn post.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu was introduced in May 2024, with the company highlighting partnerships with universities to make AI accessible to students and faculty, according to OpenAI’s website.
