Unknown Drones Sighted Above Critical Infrastructure in East Groningen

Unknown Drones Sighted Above Critical Infrastructure in East Groningen

October 20, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Unidentified drones recently sighted above key industrial infrastructure in East Groningen have prompted a police investigation, RTV Noord reported. The sightings occurred near crucial energy facilities in Meeden, Scheemda, and Zuidbroek, following similar drone activity near the Eemshaven energy hub the previous week.

Infrastructure Targets in East Groningen

The recent reports place the unidentified aircraft over specific high-value industrial sites across the region. Sightings were logged in Meeden, Scheemda, and Zuidbroek, according to RTV Noord.

Each location hosts critical nodes of the national energy grid. A modernized high-voltage substation operates in Meeden. Scheemda houses the largest solar park in the Netherlands within the Ekepolder.

Authorities have confirmed the nature of the incidents. On this basis, we are taking into account that these are indeed drones, a police spokesperson stated to RTV Noord.

Distinction From Eemshaven Sightings

The East Groningen sightings follow a separate series of drone events recorded the prior week above the Eemshaven, a coastal hub that generates roughly one-third of the nation’s electricity. That location also features liquefied natural gas terminals, data centers—including a major facility operated by Google—wind turbine maintenance infrastructure, and a small defense establishment.

Despite the geographic proximity and the strategic importance of both areas, investigators are maintaining a cautious approach. Police stated they do not currently assume a direct link between the Eemshaven flights and the recent activity over Meeden, Scheemda, and Zuidbroek.

Precise operational details remain sparse. Regional authorities have not disclosed the exact number of drones involved, the specific timestamps of the flights, or the duration of the observations.

Public Questions Drones Mapping Energy Infrastructure

Public commentary has highlighted growing questions surrounding regional airspace security and crisis communication. Writing in the Groninger Internet Courant, Hans de Preter pointed to a lack of public clarity regarding defense protocols for critical installations. It cannot be the case that drones are casually mapping the energy supply of the Eemshaven and therefore of the Netherlands without interference, the commentary noted, questioning how regional authorities plan to manage potential infrastructure vulnerabilities.

Police investigations into the East Groningen sightings remain ongoing. Officials have not released further public statements regarding the identity of the operators or the flight trajectories of the devices.
